Turning it off has no visible effect turning it on appears to reformat the bibliography for about five or ten seconds, then has no visible can you confirm whether these latter two problems also apply to your situation? Are you able to see formatted citations in older documents, but adding new citations creates unformatted ones? Are you able to edit or update the appearance of any citations? Does toggling Instant Formatting have any effect on any citations at all? Existing, formatted citations remain formatted when I turn it off, and my own, unformatted citations remain unformatted when I turn it on. In fact, toggling Instant Formatting has no effect on anything at all, ever. I also cannot edit the appearance of the existing citations: it recognises if I change the output formatting from Default to, say, Author (Year), in that the context menu is updated to show Author (Year), but actual formatting on the page does not change, regardless of whether it’s an existing, formatted citation or one of my own, unformatted ones.

In the MS Word CWYW plugin, Instant Formatting is on, and toggling it makes no difference (whether before or after citations are added). I can open documents others have created using EndNote, and their citations show up as formatted, but when I add my own, they are persistently unformatted. I’m having the exact same problem, with almost the exact same setup: EndNote X9, recently installed MS Word for Mac 2016 (16.16.5), installed before EndNote macOS 10.14.1. I am persistently getting references as non-numbered, seen as and bibliography at the bottom of word document is not showing up.

Bibliography – Turn the bibliography On to have new citations automatically added to a bibliography at the end of the document. The default is Off, which reduces processing time for documents with many citations.

Update document and references – Refreshes the references from your RefWorks account and updates the document.

Change Project – Select a different RefWorks project from which to select references.

You can set the surname display format by clicking Differentiate authors, located below the citation style drop-down menu. Author differentiation settings are saved at the user level therefore, settings made in RefWorks are reflected in RCM and the reverse.

Styles used in RefWorks display as recent in RCM and the reverse.

For styles with a footnote format, you can select the footnote format as the default.

When searching for a style in the search box, you can check the CSL Styles check box to include CSL styles in the search.

The style is removed from the Favorites list when RefWorks is refreshed.

To remove a favorite from the list, clear the star icon. The style then appears in the Favorite styles drop-down list, which appears if there is at least one style marked as a favorite. You can mark a style as a favorite by selecting the star icon next to the style in a list.

There are three drop-down lists that help you find styles: Recent Styles, a custom list, and Institutional.

Change citation style – opens the Citation Settings pane from where you can select a citation style from a drop-down list or from one of the sub-menus. All citations and the bibliography are updated to the new style.

Cite references – return to the References List pane.
